The national virtual ward data published recently showed sustained expansion in virtual wards. Virtual ward capacity was at an all time record in the month at 12,825 beds and continued high levels of use at 9,767 patients. That’s 1,142 more patients at the snapshot than in March 24.

The total for the year being 111,045 people who have benefitted from a hospital at home model. But read on for why, as well as this being a record, this may be only half the story.

Over 111,000 people received care on a virtual ward last year

It felt right to be with friends and colleagues from across health tech and the NHS at Digital Health Rewired in Birmingham recently. Despite considerable change ahead, people were remarkably upbeat and keen to ensure that tech advances play key roles in the challenges faced by the NHS.

Some highpoints for me?

Rachel Hope reminded us that prevention has been discussed since the inception of the NHS in 1948 however we now have new tools that we can use to support prevention that were not previously available

Greater Manchester operates the largest virtual ward in the country, with over 600 people being cared for at home on the latest snapshot day in January 2025. Contributing to an all time record of 10,162 people cared for in this way across the NHS in England that month.

It was great to visit the impressive cardiology Hospital at Home service at Salford Royal, that is part of this achievement to shift from hospital to home, analogue to digital, treament to prevention, and hear from the clinical team running it what a difference it is

9 December 2024

In this White Paper, written with Martin Ratz, we’ve given thought as to how technology can best be harnessed to support the three shifts we seek to make across the NHS; hospital to home, analogue to digital and treatment to prevention.

The forthcoming 10 year plan for the NHS is a great opportunity to make a step change in provision and so we consider the digital solutions worthy of NHS wide scale to make a real difference to patient care and the staff who support them.

Protecting hearts in Herts

Digital Home Care progress

At the NHS Providers Annual Conference, I shared the stage with Sarah Brierley as we told the story of impressive work in Hertfordshire to look after people living with Heart Failure in a very different way. That tech-enabled home care had reduced A&E attendances by one-third in the supported cohort, reduced readmissions, improved symptoms and increased confidence. Such that the service had won an award for the team - it’s the model of care I believe should be the norm for people living with progressive disease.
